Acrylic or glycerol, matte, glossy or satin? Choosing the right paint not only according to your tastes but also to the nature of your walls can give us cold sweats of anxiety. In fact, today, not only are interior paint ranges available in an impressive variety of colors, shades, and finishes, but they also feature an increasing number of technical characteristics designed to facilitate application on specific substrates or to add properties that can prove valuable.

Acrylic or glycerol?

  • Acrylic paints, known as emulsion or water-based, have little odor and dry quickly. They maintain long-term flexibility and good resistance to cracking and peeling. They do not yellow, have good wet adhesion, and resistance to hydrophilic dirt like coffee, fruit juice, wine…
  • Alkyd paints, the famous “glycerol,” often have better coverage. Upon drying, they harden and form an abrasion-resistant film. They tend to yellow, but less and less with quality paints. The issue of drying odors remains to be resolved, but here too, some “glycerols” have made obvious progress.

  • Matte paint, washable but not scrub-able, offers a warm atmosphere as it does not reflect light. It is ideal for large surfaces (on ceilings, for example) from which it hides imperfections in flatness.
  • Glossy paint reflects light and gives a very smooth appearance to walls while enhancing colors. It does not attract dirt and can be washed. It is generally applied to woodwork in doors and windows or in humid rooms.
  • Finally, satin paint combines the advantages of the two previous paints. Washable, it is easy to use in the living room.
